C. W. Green
I can not post this whole Obit here, but will post the important information. Posted on Aug. 20, 1902 a write up about the funeral of C. W. Green at the M. E. Church. Sorry I don't have more information. Note from Sandy: Charles W. Green was born to William R. and Avis (Burlingham) Green. When Charles was small his family moved to Indiana and settled in the woods to make a farm. Charles learned most his education by hard work rather than by books. He and his family came to Oquawka, Illinois in 1848. Charles was hired out to work on a farm for several years. He married Florence Armstrong, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Kernahan) Armstrong on January 1, 1857. (See Florence's link below for information on her and their children.) Charles enlisted July 21, 1862, in Co. G, 84th Ill. Infantry. He fought in the Battle of Stone River, December 31, 1862. The story of his ordeal and near death experience is recorded in "History of Mercer and Henderson counties", pages 988-989. A shot grazed his ear and entered his left eye. He was on the battlefield and thought dead for three days. He was discharged on Feb. 9th 1863. After much dificulty with his injury he was employed by John McKinney to work in a store. He went to Kirkwood to learn photography but didn't care for this work so returned to Oquawka to become assistant postmaster. On Nov. 5, 1864 he was sworn in as Postmaster. He had been a Democract at the begining of the war, but became a republican after. |
